Budget Decorating Tips

You don’t have to hire an interior designer or have a complete DIY shop in the garage to update your home’s look. There are lots of ways to freshen things up and still stay within your decorating budget.

Paint Those Walls
Paint is a relatively low cost way to change a room and it is easy to do yourself. Neutral walls are great if you like to change the color accents in your room with pillows and wall accessories. Bold color on the walls, or even on one wall of a room, will make a big impact. The paint departments at home improvement stores have lots of ideas for interesting color combinations. There are brochures at the store and online tools that can help you envision what you room would look like in the new color. Don’t skimp on paint, though. Buying really good quality paint, brushes, and rollers makes the job easier to do and will yield better results when the project’s finished.

Repurpose Old Furniture
An older piece of furniture can be given new life by a new finish. Stripping and refinishing involves some work, but you will love the end result. The key is to have enough imagination to look past what the piece looks like now to what it could look like later. In addition to what you might have in your living room or garage, you may be able to pick up older pieces at garage sales or thrift stores that are worth your time. If course, if you have always wondered whether that old table you got from your grandmother might be worth something on Antiques Road Show, you should probably have it evaluated before starting in.

Sew, Sew, Sew
If you know how to sew, you have a whole world of designer fabric waiting for your creative talents. Budget decorating can inspire to make all sorts of colorful accessories for your room like pillows, window treatments, and tablecloths fairly cheaply if you can wait for the fabric to go on sale. If you are really ambitious you could even try a reupholstering project. Fabric is available in stores as well as online.

Rearrange
If you can’t afford new furniture, maybe all you need to do is to rearrange what you already have to change the feel and focus of the room. Perhaps just one new piece would be all you need in a newly configured design.

Call Your Friends
If you have a creative friend, ask him or her for advice. A friend can look at your home with a more objective perspective and may see how to change a room to maximize its impact. This is design help on the cheap.

Enlist a crew to come and help you paint. This will help get the project done quickly and cheaply, and they will probably be glad to help if you provide a nice dinner after the job is done.

If you have a tight budget, decorating doesn’t have to be expensive. You don’t even have to do the whole room at the same time. Try to develop an overall vision for your room, and work on different aspects of the project as you have the time and money

Opera at the Movies

As the artistic medium of opera enjoys a resurgence of popularity, people around the country are realizing what enthusiasts have known for centuries–that it is an exciting, emotionally gripping art form to those who take the time to learn its unique language. Today, a brilliant project has removed nearly every objection that a newcomer could pose to giving opera a try.

The Live in HD program brings live, high definition broadcasts of the nation’s best known opera venue, the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, to the comfortable setting of your town’s movie theater. For a fraction of the cost of a ticket to the Met, you can show up in your sweats and recline in a theater seat while you experience the work of the world’s greatest vocalists, instrumentalists, set and costume designers–not to mention some of the most powerful music ever composed.

For years, the Metropolitan Opera has broadcast select productions live over public radio, but this new partnership takes the company’s outreach efforts to a new level. Many people who would be unlikely to buy a full-priced opera ticket are willing to visit their favorite multiplex for an evening of something different.

Need to step out for a restroom break? No problem. Don’t know when to clap? Doesn’t matter; the performers won’t hear you anyway. And perhaps most importantly, you can be sure that your view will be better than any seat at the Met itself, featuring close-up shots and camera angles that would be unavailable in person.

Even seasoned opera goers relish the unprecedented opportunity to see live performances by legendary singers without traveling and paying a fortune for admission. If you have not yet experienced the unique sound of opera, these unbelievable voices are the best ones to introduce you to it. The music is not the only attraction of a live broadcast from the Met, though. Set, lighting, and costume design comprise an art form all their own, and many directors stretch the limits of their capabilities by incorporating technology with traditional techniques.

If you are looking for a “pain-free” way to find out why so many people love the opera, check out the Live in HD website at The Metropolitan Opera to see if there is a participating cinema in your town. Instead of sitting through Hollywood’s latest romantic comedy this weekend, take part in one of Western culture’s oldest art forms, broadcast live from the Met. You might be hooked for life!

Square Foot Gardening

There is nothing quite like a home-grown tomato or some really fresh green beans from your garden. Maybe you have always wanted to have a vegetable or flower garden but just didn’t know how to get started. Square foot gardening is a great way to begin, and has the added advantage of making very efficient use of your garden space. Rather than wasting a lot of ground between rows in a traditional garden, each square foot of space is continuously occupied during your growing season.

Basic Plans
The basic plan for square foot gardening is a square that is four feet by four feet, giving you sixteen square feet of growing space. It is easy to reach each square from the sides of the area so tending your garden is easy. If you want to grow more than this will allow, simply prepare multiple beds with adequate aisles between them. Now you have to consider the sun, soil, and water needs of your plants.

Gardening Tools in Soil

Gardening Tools

Sun
Most vegetable and flowers need 6 to 8 hours of full sun a day to produce well. Don’t put your garden in an area that is shaded or one that puddles after rain.

Soil
If you already have good soil in a great location, you could use the square foot gardening method to maximize the efficiency of your already prepared garden area. If your soil is less than ideal, making a raised bed from 2″ x 6″ untreated lumber is easy. Make sure to use untreated lumber, since the chemicals used to treat the lumber can leach into the soil. Fill the box with a mixture of 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite. Since you never walk on the soil it will stay nice and loose, perfect for growing great vegetables.

Mark off the sixteen squares with string or wire and you are ready to plant!

Choosing Plants
What flowers do you love? What do you like to eat? What is best suited to the climate conditions and length of growing season in your area? To maximize your production, you can plant several smaller plants in one square whereas one bigger plant, like broccoli, may take up the whole space. Guides are available that help you to plan out your space. After harvesting from the square, simply add a little extra compost, mix it in, and replant the square to keep it producing.

Water
Make sure that you visit the garden regularly to check on the soil conditions and water if necessary. Don’t overwater, though, since this can be just as bad for your plants as not having enough. Keep the weeds under control to get the best yield and be alert for garden pests.

It only takes a few hours to get started with square foot gardening but you will enjoy seeing your plants grow all summer. And you will get to enjoy some delicious vegetables and lovely flowers that you have grown yourself.

Anyone Can Bake Bread

Many people are sort of scared to bake bread for the first time, but the process is so uncomplicated that just about anyone can achieve good success with the help of these few tips below. All you need is 20 minutes or so to get the dough ready and a few hours around the house occupied with other projects while you check in on the dough. The delicious aroma and wonderful taste – not to mention the nutrition benefits and pride of making freshly baked bread is well worth the effort.

Preparing the Dough
A basic recipe for one loaf of sandwich bread is:
1 package of yeast
1/2  cup of lukewarm water
2/3 cups of lukewarm milk
1 egg
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of sugar (this is variable, but we like our bread a little sweet)
1 teaspoon of salt
3 1/2  cups of flour, usually half white and half whole wheat

Dough Rising

Dough Rising

Sprinkle the yeast onto the water and add a little of the sugar. Wait for about 10 minutes for bubbles to appear that prove that the yeast is active. Add the milk, egg, oil, remaining sugar, and the salt and mix with a whisk until thoroughly blended.

Add half of the flour and beat with a spoon. Beating the batter now helps to reduce the kneading time later. Add the rest of the flour and incorporate it into the dough. If you are a beginner, you may get the best results by starting with bread flour that has more natural gluten. If you are using heavy stone-ground whole wheat flour, you may want to lighten the loaf by replacing some of it with white flour and adding extra gluten. Other finer ground whole wheat flours may do fine. This is something that you gain with experience with the flours available in your store.

Turn the dough out onto the counter and knead it by folding and pressing repeatedly, adding flour to keep it from sticking to the counter, until the dough is smooth and springy. Kneading develops the gluten in the flour and gives the bread its texture by creating spaces to contain the gases produced by the yeast that make the dough rise. Beginners may need to set the timer for 6 or 7 minutes to make sure they are kneading enough. As your kneading gets more effective and you develop a feel for the dough, you won’t have to knead quite so long.

Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled. Punch it down, roll it up tightly, tuck the ends under, and place it in your oiled 5″ x 8″ pan seam down.

Final Steps
Cover it with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in the pan until it is just higher than the top of the pan and bake bread at 350° for 30-35 minutes. Remove it promptly from the pan. Buttering the top of the loaf while it is hot keeps the crust soft and adds that warm glow of buttery flavor.

Really anyone can bake bread. Don’t be afraid of it, just try it. If your first effort is less than perfect, it will still taste delicious, and you will probably achieve better results with practice. Your family will love you for it.

Skin Cancer Symptoms

Skin cancer is a dangerous and sometimes deadly disease that can be caused by exposure to the UV rays from the sun. The good news is that skin cancer is easily treated if it is recognized early and removed before it has a chance to spread.

Types of Skin Cancer
There are three main types of skin cancer (basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma). Of these types Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type however this type of skin cancer is rarely deadly. More dangerous is Squamous cell carcinoma which is more dangerous but less common than basal cell carcinoma.  The most dangerous of the three types of skin cancer is malignant melanoma killing approximately 15% of those who contract it. You can find more information on the types of skin cancer here: http://ehealthmd.com/content/what-are-different-types-skin-cancer

Cancers are most dangerous when they metastasize, or spread, to other places in your body, invading the brain or internal organs and destroying their function. Most, though not all, skin cancers occur in areas of the body that have been exposed to the sun or to tanning devices.

Self Awareness
Skin cancer symptoms are more common in those who have the following risk factors:

  1. Fair skin and blue eyes
  2. A close relative who developed skin cancer
  3. Work in the sun or at high altitudes
  4. A history of repeated sunburns, especially as a child or young person
  5. A lot of moles, or highly pigmented moles

Skin cancer can occur in anybody, though, even those with dark skin. It is also not limited to older people, but occurs in younger people as well. This is why everybody should regularly check his or her skin for spots that don’t look normal.

The ABC’s of Melanoma
Malignant melanoma can begin in a mole, also called a pigmented nevus. This acrostic helps you to remember what to look for when checking moles on yourself or a loved one for a first appearance of melanoma, the mostly dangerous skin cancer.

Asymmetry: an uneven shape
Borders: irregular edges rather than a smooth border
Color: unusually dark color, dark spots within the moles, red, white, or blue spots
Diameter: a mole that grows larger than 6 mm, about the size of a pencil eraser
Evolving: changes in size, shape, color, or consistency, or a mole that bleeds or itches

Get Yourself Screened
Besides screening yourself, get screened regularly by a dermatologist, particularly if you have the risk factors listed above. If you have a spot or a mole that you are concerned about, don’t put off consulting a professional. Skin cancer symptoms are easily treated when detected early.

Prevention
You can’t do anything about previous UV exposure, but you can prevent it from now on. Use sun screen regularly. Many moisturizers for daily use have sunscreens incorporated in them. For prolonged outdoor activities use a sunscreen with an SPF 50. Wear a hat with a large brim to shade your face and cover your arms. Teach your children to wear sun screen as well, and prevent severe sunburns from occurring. Avoid the use of tanning beds.

A good tan might look nice now, but it is not worth the risk of wrinkled, sun-damaged skin and skin cancer in your later years. Practice good prevention, and be on the alert for the appearance of skin cancer symptoms so that you can avoid the bad consequences of this disease.

Painting wicker furniture gives it new life

Wicker furniture can be a lovely addition to a sunroom or a covered porch, but only if the finish is in good shape. If you have brought home a wicker piece from a garage sale or a thrift shop, or if you already have a tired-looking chair, the following tips can help you rejuvenate the finish and make it a showpiece again. Painting wicker is not difficult, but it does take some time.

Types of Wicker
The word ‘wicker’ refers to the weaving process used in the construction of the piece. Wicker furniture can be made of rattan reed or twisted paper fibres. More modern pieces of plastic wicker do not need refinishing. Since the first step in any painting job is thorough cleaning, you should make sure that the piece is not made of paper fibre before spraying it down.

If you have a valuable antique, a professional restorer can repair, preserve, and refinish the piece in a way that best conserves its value and beauty.

Preparation for Painting Wicker
Make any necessary repairs to the joints or the weave. Remove all the flaking paint by scraping with a soft wire brush. Make sure that you don’t damage the strands or the weave. You can use a pressure sprayer to clean rattan pieces but take care that the pressure is not high enough to cause damage and that the glue in the joints is not softened by the water. Lightly sand the piece to soften rough edges and roughen the surface for maximum paint adhesion. Remove any dust.
Two light coats of wood primer should be applied with a brush or a compressor sprayer. This helps the new coat to adhere properly and minimizes absorbtion of the paint into the wood. Primer is especially important if the new color is very different from the original. Let the primer dry thoroughly between coats and before applying the final coat.

Final Coating
When painting wicker furniture, it is best to apply two light coats of paint to avoid drips or globs between the strands. A sprayer gives good results, but a brush can be used if care is taken in application. You can set up a spray booth with a large appliance box to minimize overspray of the surroundings. Be sure that the paint you choose is compatible with the former finish. Oil-based paints and primer may be more flexible and result in less flaking, but the paint professionals at your local store can advise you.
Paint the underside of the piece first, then turn it over and finish the top.

Beautiful Restoration
Painting wicker furniture, whether the piece is a valuable family antique or just something that you liked at a garage sale, can be very satisfying. Let the paint cure thoroughly—about a week—before you use it. Add a new cushion and you will have a like-new chair or sofa that you will enjoy for years.

Bringing the Family Pet on Vacation

As you raise a pet he becomes a part of your family so of course he joins you on family vacations! Travel with your pet can be challenging, but some measures can be taken to make the trip easier on everyone.

Begin Making Adjustments before the Trip
If your pet is going to have to use a different type of feeding container, a special type of food or water, or stay in a different cage, it’s best to begin introducing it several days before the trip instead of the day you’re leaving. Slow adjustment will be easier on your pet before the day of travel.

Pack Your Pet’s Favorites
Bring a bit of home along with you on the road. Packing some of your pet’s favorite toys, treats, or harnesses may help him feel comfortable in his changing surroundings.

Get Immunizations to Keep Your Pet Healthy
Check with your veterinarian before you travel with your pet to be sure he is up-to-date on immunizations. This is especially important if you’re going to be traveling overseas, since foreign countries may expose your animal to different illnesses than those present here in the United States.

Find Pet-Friendly Accommodations
Look online for hotels and restaurants that allow pets to join their owners. Be sure to read their pet policy thoroughly to know the number and types of pets that are welcome to stay, and what restrictions or special pricing you’ll face during your stay.

Traveling with Pets on an Airplane
Air travel your with pet is especially unfamiliar, so it’s a good idea to take some extra precautions. Be sure your pet is fit to travel by getting a pretravel check-up with your vet. Even if your pet is cleared to travel it’s a good idea to bring a first-aid kit and your vet’s phone number in case something happens. You may want to check with your vet about a gentle tranquilizer in case your pet needs help keeping calm.

Before you head to the airport, give your pet a good time of exercise so he’ll be tired and hopefully sleep for the majority of the trip. Pack some food and water in case your pet gets hungry, and you can also give him a light meal before the trip.

Prepare for an Enjoyable Trip
Anticipate an enjoyable vacation when you travel with your pet, and stay as relaxed as possible through the entire journey. Your pet will sense any anxiety on your part and become restless. On the other hand, if you plan for a fun trip, you’ll begin with a relaxed attitude which may rub off on your pet!

How to Create a Multi Use Office

Many of us have that extra room that doesn’t seem to be working very well. It ends up being stuffed with odds and ends and is so cluttered that it isn’t used for anything. The following tips can help you get that space working for you again so that you end up with a multi-use office that also functions well as a spare guest room.

Home Office

Is this your Home Office?

The first step is to get in there and wade through the junk. Usually, much of the clutter can be thrown away or donated and the rest can be organized. Just find a time when you can focus on completely on the project for a few hours and get to it. Once the remaining stuff is organized, try to move as much out of the room as possible so that you can objectively evaluate the room’s merits.

If you were setting up an office workspace, what are the basic things you would need to put in there? The basics include somewhere to sit, a desk space, some drawers, and perhaps a bookshelf. Also consider electrical supply and lighting needs. Think about how you work and design a space that will help to make you most effective.

Office Supplies - Paperclip

Make sure you have the right Office Supplies

Next, consider what you would need if you were setting up a guest room. Remember that the room only has to functional well for one purpose at a time. Most guests don’t mind the presence of some extra office furniture, and may even appreciate having a place to work at their own laptop. The basic needs are bedding and place to hang clothes.

You could provide bedding with a good quality air bed that is taken down when your guest leaves. A futon or sofa bed can be used. A wall bed, like a Murphy bed, folds conveniently into a nice looking cabinet when not in use during the day, but provides a comfortable platform bed at night. Murphy beds can be purchased, but hardware kits and plans are also available for those who love DYI. You could incorporate bookcases into the bed cabinet plans as well.

If your multi-use office is big enough to accommodate both bedroom and office furniture, a screen can help to create separate spaces for each.

A multi-use office is a great way to fully utilize the space in your room. It is not much trouble to work in another room for a few days, and providing a private area for your guests makes both them and you more comfortable. So take the first steps of decluttering and brainstorming. Then get going to make your space work!

Bird Watching in Your Backyard

Backyard bird watching is a very popular hobby because it is a great way to enjoy and appreciate nature even in an urban environment. Spending a few minutes in the company of your feathered friends is a great way to relax at the end of your day. If you want to attract birds to your yard, you have to provide at least some of their basic necessities.

Humming Bird Flying

Humming Bird Flying

What Do They Eat?

If you provide what they eat, the birds will show up. Different birds eat different things, so think about which birds you would like to attract and give them what they want. A hummingbird feeder filled with nectar will be visited almost constantly and you may be treated to interesting territorial displays. Commercial seed mixes are easily available that will attract a variety of birds and a suet feeder will draw others. Besides feeders, you could plant plants and trees that provide growing food. Conifers, hollies, and other garden fruits and seeds will provide food on a natural schedule that the birds are used to. Many birds eat insects that inhabit your yard and garden, so you may want to consider the impact on the bird population of any pest control products that you use.

There are other critters that also love to eat bird food, so you may need to invest in a feeder that is designed to resist the efforts of squirrels and raccoons.

Water

During the irrigation andwatering season there is often plenty of water available for birds to drink, but other times of the year may be difficult for them. If you provide clean, fresh water, you may find birds coming to drink and bathe. Be sure to keep your bird bath clean and free of mold or algae.

A Place Out of the Weather

Birds also need shelter from the elements and a secure place to nest. Each species is particular about the nesting habitat that they choose. Some birds will nest in bird houses if they are made to the right specifications. Watching the whole nesting process and keeping track of the growth of the young ones can be a delightful part of your backyard bird watching. Trees, shrubs, and dense brush create safe places for birds to roost and to hide from predators. Evergreens provide good cover and can also be a source of winter food.
Backyard bird watching doesn’t have to be involved or cost a lot of money. Start with a basic feeder and start enjoying your visitors. You can keep adding to the attractions of your backyard habitat as time and funds allow.
